Quartz and granite are the two countertop materials we're asked about most. Both are durable and both look great — the right choice depends on how you use your kitchen and what you want it to look like.
Quick Comparison
| Quartz | Granite | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Engineered: crushed quartz bound with resin | Natural stone quarried in slabs |
| Maintenance | Non-porous; no sealing | Periodic sealing recommended |
| Heat resistance | Resin can scorch — use trivets | Handles heat well; trivets still recommended |
| Stain resistance | Very high | Good when sealed |
| Appearance | Consistent, including marble looks | Unique natural movement and color |
| Seams | Can be less noticeable | Bold patterns need careful placement |
Maintenance and Daily Use
Quartz is about as low-maintenance as countertops get: wipe with mild soap and water. Granite is also easy to live with, but sealing it periodically helps prevent stains from oils and wine. If you want to set it and forget it, quartz usually wins.
Heat Resistance
Granite tolerates heat better than quartz. Quartz's resin can discolor if a hot pan is placed directly on it. In practice, using trivets is a good habit with both.
Appearance
Choose granite if you love the idea of a one-of-a-kind slab. Choose quartz if you want a consistent color or a clean marble look without marble's maintenance. Quartzite is a third option: natural stone with marble-like veining and high hardness.
Seams and Installation
Large islands and L-shaped runs may require seams. With quartz, consistent patterns can make seams less visible; with dramatic granite, seam placement and vein matching need more planning. Both are templated after cabinets are installed and level.
Cost Variables
- Slab group or grade
- Thickness (2cm vs 3cm)
- Edge profile
- Number of cutouts (sink, cooktop)
- Seams and island size
- Backsplash height
