Converting a bathtub into a walk-in shower is one of the most common bathroom projects we discuss. Done well, it gives you an easier-to-use, easier-to-clean shower. Here's what to plan for.
Layout
Most conversions reuse the tub's alcove — typically around 60 inches wide. Sometimes you can enlarge the shower by borrowing space from a linen closet or reworking an adjacent wall. Decide early whether the entry will be a door, a fixed panel, or open.
Drain Location
Tub drains sit at one end; shower drains are often centered or replaced with a linear drain along a wall. Moving the drain requires opening the floor and adjusting slope. On slab foundations, this can mean cutting concrete.
Waterproofing
A shower needs a continuous waterproof assembly: sloped pan, membrane on walls and floor, and sealed seams and penetrations. Tile and grout alone aren't waterproof.
Glass
Frameless glass gives a clean look and is easier to clean. Glass is measured after tile is finished, so it's usually the last item installed.
Tile and Niches
- Large-format wall tile means fewer grout lines.
- Smaller or textured floor tile adds traction.
- Plan niche location so it aligns with tile layout and isn't on an exterior wall if possible.
- Consider a bench or foot ledge for shaving.
Curb vs Curb-Free
A low curb is straightforward in a tub alcove. Curb-free showers require recessing or sloping the floor so water stays in the shower — easier in some homes than others.
Accessibility
If accessibility matters now or later, plan for blocking for grab bars, a handheld shower on a slide bar, a bench, and a low or no curb entry.
Ventilation
Showers create concentrated steam. An exterior-vented exhaust fan sized for the room helps protect paint, grout and cabinetry in Jacksonville's humidity.
Project Planning
Decide on fixtures and tile before demolition so the valve, niche and drain can be placed correctly. Learn more on our tub-to-shower conversion page and walk-in shower installation page, estimate a range with the calculator, or request a free quote.
